Insolvenzen steigen erneut: Gastgewerbe, Bau und Logistik besonders unter Druck

Die Welle an Unternehmensinsolvenzen in Deutschland setzt sich zu Jahresbeginn fort, auch wenn das Tempo zunächst etwas gedämpfter ausfällt. Im Januar meldeten die Amtsgerichte 1.919 beantragte Firmenpleiten, ein Plus von 4,9 Prozent im Vergleich zum Vorjahresmonat, wie das Statistische Bundesamt auf Basis vorläufiger Zahlen mitteilte. Im Dezember war der Anstieg mit knapp 14 Prozent noch deutlich kräftiger ausgefallen. Die Statistik bildet zudem nur die Fälle ab, die von den Gerichten so weit bearbeitet werden, dass sie in die amtliche Erfassung einfließen – der Insolvenzantrag selbst kann laut Bundesamt oft fast drei Monate zurückliegen.

Besonders hart trifft es weiterhin das Gastgewerbe. Hier verzeichneten die Statistiker 9,1 Insolvenzen je 10.000 Unternehmen und damit die höchste Quote aller Branchen. Überdurchschnittlich betroffen waren außerdem Verkehr und Lagerei sowie das Baugewerbe. Die Belastungen aus schwacher Nachfrage, gestiegenen Kosten und dem Ende vieler Pandemie-Sonderhilfen spiegeln sich damit weiter im Insolvenzgeschehen wider, auch wenn die Januar-Zahlen im historischen Vergleich noch nicht die stärksten Ausschläge zeigen.

Ein Blick auf die Quartalsdaten des Leibniz-Instituts für Wirtschaftsforschung Halle (IWH) deutet jedoch auf eine deutlich angespanntere Lage hin. Das IWH, das die Entwicklung der Insolvenzen monatlich auswertet, zählte im ersten Quartal 2026 insgesamt 4.573 Firmenpleiten – den höchsten Stand seit mehr als 20 Jahren. Höher lagen die Zahlen zuletzt im dritten Quartal 2005. Allein im März registrierte das Institut 1.716 Insolvenzen von Personen- und Kapitalgesellschaften, 71 Prozent mehr als in einem durchschnittlichen März der Jahre 2016 bis 2019 und damit deutlich über dem Niveau der Vor-Corona-Zeit.

Nach Einschätzung von IWH-Forscher Steffen Müller ist kurzfristig keine nachhaltige Entspannung zu erwarten. Es sei möglich, dass sich die sehr hohen Werte aus dem März im laufenden Quartal wiederholten, sagte er. Bereits 2025 war die Zahl der Unternehmenspleiten nach amtlichen Angaben auf den höchsten Stand seit 2014 gestiegen: 24.064 Fälle entsprachen einem Zuwachs von gut 10 Prozent gegenüber dem Vorjahr. Schon 2023 und 2024 hatten die Insolvenzen jeweils um mehr als 20 Prozent zugelegt. Vor diesem Hintergrund dürfte der moderate Januar-Anstieg eher als Zwischenstopp in einem längerfristigen Aufwärtstrend zu werten sein als als Beginn einer Trendwende.
